"Through bold stylized animals I create whimsical stories to evoke compassion for the world's creatures and ourselves."
I was one of those kids who grew up always knowing that I wanted to be an artist. I drew constantly, day dreaming, fantasizing grand stories and images. I am proudly an indigenous woman from the Sac & Fox nation. I pursued my artistic dreams and I grew up to be a professional artist, toy designer, academic professor and author/ illustrator of over 33 children’s books published in several languages. My illustrations are found in picture books, educational books, classroom readers, magazines, and on book covers, puzzles, posters, greeting cards, t-shirts, giftware and public murals. My fine art paintings are found in numerous private and public collections around the country. I am faculty at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM, where I love teaching illustration and digital arts. I also developed and created the brand trademark titled, ZombieZoo® including the design, manufacturing and release of a plush toy line and books, which has attracted international attention.
I primarily use acrylic paint on many different surfaces. In my underpainting I start with a thick layer of gesso. I can build rich color layer by layer, allowing the eye to see down through the layers to create a luminous and rich painting.
From a young child, I have had a connection with animals. My love for animals never waned and to this day they continue to be my inspiration. I have combined my love of animals and the environment with the art I create.
